Insights

Sigiriya, known as the "Lion Rock," is considered the 8th wonder of the world. An ancient fortress complex built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, it showcases architectural and horticultural engineering of its time. Due to its cultural significance, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status. The rock elevates 200 meters above surrounding forests.

The fortress complex encompasses remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys, and operational fountains. Its history dates back to the 3rd century BC when it served as a Buddhist monastery. After King Kashyapa's death, it became a monastery again until the 14th century.

Sigiriya's most striking features are its frescoes and mirror wall. The intricate and colorful frescoes provide insights into ancient lifestyles. The mirror wall, once highly polished, protected the frescoes and featured inscriptions by ancient visitors.

Adjacent to Sigiriya, Pidurangala Rock offers a climbing activity and stunning photo opportunities with Sigiriya in the background. Elephant watching, Dambulla Rock Temple, and hot air balloon tours are additional attractions in the area.
