Yala National Park, known as the first proclaimed wildlife sanctuary in Asia by the British, is located in the southern region, attached to the Indian Ocean on one side. Spanning an area of 980 sq km, which is the second-largest national park in Sri Lanka, it is renowned as a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The park offers a diverse ecosystem, including grasslands, brackish lagoons, and dense forests, providing habitats for 44 identified mammal species and 215 bird species.

Yala is most famous for its tremendous population of Sri Lankan leopards, making it one of the best places in the world to spot these big cats in their natural habitat. In addition to leopards, the park is home to a variety of other wildlife such as elephants, sloth bears, buffaloes, deer, and crocodiles, among others. Its vibrant birdlife includes both resident and migratory species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
